Feedback

Overall the rough cut of my video has had positive feedback from my classmates. However when my teacher viewed it she worried that the shots weren't keeping up with the beat of the song, especially during 2.34 - 2.55, I edited the shots so that they would change after the verse "I wake up screaming you name". The shots now change every 1.3 seconds to match the drum beat.

Victoria Whitbread: kjgjuyguygehtuyayyu!!
This is amazing! :D ♥
Can't wait to see the whole thing! You full on deserve an A* for that!

Wickedddd! :D
My parents think its pretty mint too y'know :) Said it was dead good filming :D

Craig Oatley: :O That was really really good Jodie! Love it :D

Sam Purser: Tis really good :D I get where it's gonna flow

AMV's

AMV's are another way of promoting songs. Though this is only used on youtube, using footage from anime's, films, tv shows etc and editing them to fit the song has proved popular to their target audience.

A personal favourite AMV is based around a character from an anime-

Because of this, when I hear this song I usually associate it with the anime used in the footage.

Songs used within films have made an appearance by fans in the amv world also.

Test Shots

This shot was eventually used but a much better version has been used for the final product.

In the end this shot wasn't used in the video, whilst this was a good idea to portray the boyfriend remembering her, I decided to use a shot where he's looking at pictures rather than her profile page.

Sadly this shot wasn't used. I really hoped to edit it in time with the song but it was difficult to edit so all the words could be seen but so that it wouldn't mess up the timing.

I only used part of this clip for the lipsyncing because Sam looked at the camera whilst I was filming.

Marketing

Music Videos are a very popular way of promoting new songs and to allow the artist to portray what their song is about. Music videos are also a form of entertainment, having a narrative within the song helps to keep the audience entertained but some video's seem to make no sense at all. Rather than having a narrative, they simply make a humourous video.

Songs also help to promote new films. An example of this is Linkin Parks 2009 song 'New Divide' to promote Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. This was directed by Joe Hahn.

The surreal effects in the video fit with the sci-fi genre of the film and is very entertaining to watch.

Rock Music is often associated with action films, a good example would be the trailer for Clash of the Titans, in the background, The Used is playing in the background with The Bird and the Worm:

However, the lyrics are taken out and only music is used.

Band Members

The band members I'm using for the photos and music footage will be-

Sam Purse - Vocals/Lead Guitar
Becca Carter - Guitar
Sam Lane - Base Guitar
Stewart Boyd - Drums

I chose them because they have an indie look and style to them, however, finding time to get the footage and photos will be hard because we all have different time tables during school.

The album cover will either be a photo of the band or my idea to burn lots of paper and try to spell out the name 'Ashes' in the ashes of the paper or spell out the name with the burnt paper itself.

Another idea is to get Stewart, Sam, Becca and Sam together in a photo booth and use the picture stye from that for album cover. I can either put the photos on a table for a simple background, or, place it on the burnt paper remains.

Goodwin's six points

# Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics (e.g. stage performance in metal video, dance routine for boy/girl band).

# There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

# There is a relationship between music and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

# The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).

# There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.

# There is often intertextual reference (to films, tv programmes, other music videos etc).

Camera Shots

Close Up Shot - Used to show expressions of Craig and Victoria and on the instruments.

Medium Shot - Used a lot in my video, mainly used to show Craig and Victoria hugging/kissing. Also used during the band shots to show Sam singing/playing.

Panning Shot - Only used once but recieved a lot of positive feedback, used during the flashback shots in the middle of the song where it fades to Craig and Victoria walking toegther to Craig walking by himself.

Extreme Close Up - Mostly used on the instruments and towards the end of the song with Sam singing.

Rotating Shot - Accidentily shot whilst at the park, this did end up in the video and worked surprisingly well.

Long Shot - Wasn't really able to use this shot too much because the zoom on my camera was poor but I used it once whilst they were on Mansfield when the line 'On Main Street' plays.

Over the Shoulder Shot - Used to its best effect at the end of the video where Victoria comes back to Craig. Whilst her expression is hopeful, his is confused and maybe a little angry. Also used when he 'see's' her.

Low Angle Shot - Used in the band moments to add some variety.

Pitch

Bands Name: Ashes

Song: Main Street

Outline of Ideas

The song I've chosen is called Main Street. The lyrics suggest that a couple are happy together but the girlfriend suddenly leaves (and possibly breaks up with) her boyfriend and lives somewhere else, however, he still loves her and is missing her a lot. The lyrics also suggest that the last time he saw her was on 'main street'

The idea I have gathered from this is that the filming will be focused on the boyfriend reminising his time with her and I'll also show some clips of the girlfriend. The clips of the girlfriend will show when the verse:

"I hope the wind blows through your hair
I hope you’re happy over there
I hope the sun sparkles on your skin
I hope you found beauty within"

I'm also debating on whether to bring the girlfriend back at the end of the song but rather than having them make up straight away, I plan to show the girlfriend turning up at the boyfriends house and he just stands there and the video will end there, leaving the audience wondering if they will get back together or not.

What resources will you need?

The actors in the video will be my friends Victoria and Craig as the couple.

For the lip syincing I hope to record our friends miming to the song. The props will be a simple camcorder and possible a tri-pod if needed. Mobile phones will be used aswell for scenes when the boyfriend could be sending the girlfriend messages that he misses her.

The setting will mostly be on a main road so it fits with the title of the song. I'll also be filming in the park and inside either Victorias or Craigs house when the line "I wake up screaming your name" plays.

Justification of ideas in relation to genre and artist

Whilst searching for an artist, I specifically was aiming for an indie band. They are known for their cheerful music and had we'd been able to make a video for a signed artist, it would be easy to create. The song I've chosen has a typical upbeat indie rock genre, though the theme for the song is about a breakup and the girl disappearing, the beat of the song has the classic tone for an indie band.

Main Street Lyrics

Main Street - Ashes

Don’t you hide your feelings
Don’t lie to my face
Let me know how you’re feeling
While we’re alone in this place

I hope the wind blows through your hair
I hope you’re happy over there
I hope the sun sparkles on your skin
I hope you found beauty within

So when you left me stranded
Threw out the love
You left me empty handed without a hope
Along Main Street
I miss you
Along Main Street
I miss you

Remenission is caught hurting me
There’s no where I can hide
And all you do is keep on enduring me
Or look inside

I hope the wind blows through your hair
I hope you’re happy over there
I hope the sun sparkles on your skin
I hope you found beauty within

So when you left me stranded
Threw out the love
You left me empty handed without a hope
Along Main Street
I miss you
Along Main Street
I miss you

Lets go!

I wake up screaming your name
(I wake up screaming your name)
I wake up screaming your name
(I wake up screaming your name)
I wake up screaming your name
(I wake up screaming your name)
I wake up screaming your name
(I wake up screaming your name)

So when you left me stranded
Threw out the love
You left me empty handed without a hope
Along Main Street
I miss you
Along Main Street
I miss you

Voyeurism Theory

The Voyeurism theoy is based on the belief that in some media there is a notion of looking. Sometimes, this can be portrayed in a sexual way, especially towards women.

Women can often be portrayed as objects or they are presented as being shown just to look at. This theory is also applied to some music videos as some objectify and sexualise women. An example of this Katy Perry and Snoop Dogs video, California Girls. Katy Perry in the video is shown sporting a two piece bikini and long with other women and also shown completely naked (whilst lying on 'clouds'.

It's been that bad that some videos have been completely banned, cut and censored for extreme cases of this presentation of women. I have not used Voyeurism in my music video as this theory doesn't apply to my genre of music or any indie band videos.

Chosen Artist :D

The artist I have chosen are called Ashes. They are from Southern California and are an Indie/Rock band. I chose this genre of music because it will appeal to my target audience. I discovered them on http://www.unsignedbandweb.com/ and felt that their upbeat style would allow me to create an entertaining video despite the song having a sad narrative.

They are also found on http://www.purevolume.com/ where they have 3 albums, where they have a total of 14 songs. The song I've chosen is from the album Fade. The track I have chosen is called Main Street, it has an upbeat tone despite having a sad narrative. They also have acoustic versions of some of their songs (including the track I've chosen). Once I've filmed and edited my shots for the video, I'll apply the acoustic track to see if it will have the same effect as the original version of the track.

They also took part in the Station 3:16 Summer Sound-Off in 2003 in a battle of the bands competition. Out of 27 other bands, Ashes took home first place along with $5000 from the competition.

As they are a boy band, I hope to film my friends band playing/rehearsing and take a photo of them for the CD cover.

I've sent an e-mail requesting to use their song but have not yet received a reply from them.

Main Street Lyrics - Analysis

Analysis

Don't you hide your feelings
Don't lie to my face
Let me know how you're feeling
While we're alone in this place

The girlfriend appears to be showing signs of not feeling the same about him, the boyfriend takes her to secret place and asks her to tell him what's wrong/what's on her mind.

I hope the wind blows through your hair
I hope you're happy over there
I hope the sun sparkles on your skin
I hope you found beauty within

Verse leading up to the chorus. The girlfriend has probably moved away, possibly to another country, the lyrics suggest that she's moved to somewhere sunny and warm and he's hoping that she's happy over there.

So when you left me stranded
Threw out the love
You left me empty handed
Without a hope
Along Main Street
And I miss you
Along Main Street
I miss you

The couple haven't appeared to have ended on good terms. The girlfriend has basically abandoned him without any hope of them getting back together or ever seeing each other again, the place where they last met was on Main Street and despite hoping she's happy where she is, he misses her.

Remenission is caught hurting me
There’s no where I can hide
And all you do is keep on enduring me
Or look inside

The boyfriend is remember the times they had together but he's finding it painful to remeniss about it and that he can't hide away from the memories.

I wake up screaming your name (repeated)

As it says, he constantly has dreams about her coming back but it results in him waking up in the middle of the night screaming her name.

Auteur Theory

Auteur is the French for the word author. The theory means that the authors voice has a distinct tone that shows through their work. Film producers and directors are known to show similar auteur influences on the films they've produced.

An example of this is when a music video director may show their own interests or beliefs through the music videos they have produced.

Target audience

The target audience for my music video and song genre is teenagers. This is because the song I've chosen has an appeal to teenagers who are in a relationship or have broken up on bad terms.
Those who enjoy rock/indie music will like the song because it appeals to their chosen genre of music, also, as my band members/actors in the video have an indie type clothing style, they can relate to their audience and therefore gain more publicity for their music and make them more popular.

Jesse McCartney - Just So You Know - review

Jesse McCartney - Just So You Know

Lighting

Camera Shots

Meaning of Song

The meaning of this song is very simple. Jesse is in love with his friends girlfriend, but under the circumstances, he cant show or even tell her how he feels with the fear of upsetting his friend and making things worse for him. He's tried many times to stop the feelings he's feeling but he just cant do it and he's hating himself for it. The songs explains that he's loved her for a long time and even if she does turn him down, he wants her to know his feelings.

Lyrics

I shouldn't love you but i want to
I just can't turn away
I shouldn't see you but i can't move
I can't look away

And i dont know how to be fine when i'm not
Cause i don't know how to make the feelings stop

Just so you know
This feelings takin control
Of me and i can't help it
I wont sit around
I can't let him win now
Though you should know
I've tryed my best to let go of you
But i don't want to
I just gutta say it all before you go
Just so you know

It's gettin hard to
Be around you
Theres so much i can't say
And do you want me to hide the feelings
And look away

And i dont know how to be fine when i'm not
Cause i don't know how to make the feelings stop

Just so you know
This feelings takin control
Of me and i can't help it
I wont sit around
I can't let him win now
Though you should know
I've tryed my best to let go of you
But i don't want to
I just gutta say it all before you go
Just so you know

This emptyness is killin me
I'm wonderin why i've waited so long
Lookin back i realize it was always there to be spoken
Now i'm waitin here
Been waitin here

Just so you know
This feelings takin control
Of me and i can't help it
I wont sit around
I can't let him win now
Though you should know
I've tryed my best to let go of you
But i don't want to
I just gutta say it all before you go
Just so you know

Animatic

Our animatic is the music video of Hero by Chad Kroeger and Josey Scott. We chose this song because it's well known and a good video to create an animatic for as it has scenes from the Spider Man film and the band play within the scenes of the film to link with the song.

Our group was Hannah Taylor, Sam Lane, Maddie Monte, Holly Breen and myself.

Sam drew the shots, Hannah and I did the line art for the sketches and Holly and Maddie coloured the shots in.

Globus - Orchard of Mines review

Globus - Orchard of Mines

Globus is a band creating a blend of dramatic & cinematic music fused with classic rock & pop, amongst other elements.

Globus is essentially a classic rock band, fronted by 24 year old Surrey based Dann Pursey, and featuring Skunk Anansie and Feeder drummer Mark Richardson and Manic Street Preachers’ keyboardist Nick Naysmith.

Lighting

Very little lighting is used in this video. Only small glimpses of light are used when it appears that the lead singer is walking past a window or possibly the headlights of a car going by. The darkness of the video represents the devastation that has happened and creates an eerie feel to video. The use of fire in the background lights up the video slightly but also hints that a fire has occurred within the narrative.

Camera Shots

The use of camera shots is varied in this video but is used to great effect. The shots range from close ups, extreme close ups, long shots and medium shots. The extreme close ups are used on some inanimate objects on ashes in the building to show that there has been a fire and everything has been burnt. They also mainly focus on the instruments as the song gets faster; this allows the audience to see that there are ashes on the instruments as they play. It also shows the emotions of the girlfriend and boyfriend in certain events. The shots seem to be calm and smooth as the song begins but as the song gains in the pace along with the narrative, the camera shots become more erratic and fast to match the pace of the song. They move very quickly to show different band members and the shots of the lead singer with the girlfriend. Medium shots are mainly used during both narrative and band, the narrative part showing the girlfriend setting fire to her boyfriend’s clothes and her being lying on a bed being surrounded by fire. These are used on the band members to show them playing and the lead singer playing/singing.

Editing

Like the use of camera the shots, the editing starts off calm becomes very erratic as the song picks up pace, this adds to the drama happening within the narrative to make it more effective. The video appears to have to have a dark blue filter over it but as the fire is introduced it seems to fade until the shots within the burnt building are shown again. The band shots appear to be more dominant but this fits well against the narrative. The band is constantly switching from being surrounded by fire to playing the burnt remains of the building. The video starts off with the lead singer in the building and ends with him and his girlfriend in the building again, the end of video shows them about to kiss but then switches back to the lead singer as his last verse of the song echoes.

Meaning of song

So far as I can tell there are 2 possible explanations that can be taken with the lyrics. The first being that the band is known for their slight religious undertones, the 2nd being that, as far as I can tell, is that this song is about a relationship that is on it's edge. It can go either way, and right away the song starts off with an argument. Someone has brought up a past failure of the other partner, and that person obviously isn't listening to what the other is saying. Anything that is said happens to be wrong, and awkwardness occurs.

The second verse is obviously about the singer, and how he's attempting to deal with the situational issues by ending it. However, even as he claims to have a plan that won't break him, he realizes his own weakness, and can't find the heart to leave.

Lyrics

Don't taint this ground with the color of the past
Are the sounds in bloom with you?
'Cause you seem like an orchard of mines
Just take one step at a time

And you seem to break like time
So fragile on the inside, you climb these grapevines
Would you look now unto the pit of me on the ground
And you wander through these to climb these grapevines...

I'll say it to be proud; won't have my life turn upside down
Says the man with some, with some gold forged plan
Of life so incomplete, like weights strapped around my feet
Tread careful one step at a time

And you seem to break like time
So fragile on the inside, you climb these grapevines
Would you look now unto the pit of me on the ground
And you wander through these to climb these grapevines

To know, to feel, to play me once again
Do you denote from what we feel
Do you not know, I see you play the game
Do you denote...

La flama riposa
La ombra dispare
La noce immortale
La voce murmure

To know, to feel, to play me once again
Do you denote...
Do you not know, I see you play the game
Denote...

Initial Ideas / Inspiration

When I first found we were making our own music videos, I began to scan youtube for inspiration and songs to fit my ideas.

Fatboy Slims, Champion Sound has always been a favorite. Though the song has more or less nothing to do with the sound, the domino effect video has no narrative but has been viewed by over 20,000 people. The video also challenges the conventional themes of typical music videos, rather than having tri-pods or special effects, this video was filmed by two girls on camcorders following the maze of videos, dvds, sweets etc. You can also hear them laughing while the song is playing.

My idea was inspired by this feel good video. The original idea was to line up every student in the school and create a giant mexican wave throughout the video, however, I did wonder how I was going to pull this off or even make it long enough to last the duration of the song.

Though we have to use an unsigned artist this year, I still hope to follow Fatboy Slims example by creating a video without a general narrative with a 'feel good' tune in the background.

Champion Sound Lyrics

Anybody lost looking to get found
Know it when they hear the champion sound
